SOUTHWELL RATIO DELTA/P—
FLIGHT & TEST CELL TELEMETRY

Ready to sample with delta = 2.0 mm.

2.0 mm
Tube outer diameter: 30.0 mm

Adjust delta, then execute aerospace trial.

Aeronautical telemetry and flight states are evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity aerodynamic modeling.

Aeronautical assumptions and boundary condition limits

Euler buckling and the Southwell plot assume elastic buckling (slenderness lambda > lambda_critical); short columns fail by inelastic Johnson-Euler yielding. Linear regression of delta/P against delta yields a slope m = 0.0800 kN^-1 corresponding to P_cr = 12.500 kN with R^2 > 0.999999.

FOLLOW THE METHOD

A reason behind every step.

Test slender tubular aircraft struts under compressive axial loading and use the non-destructive Southwell plot to determine critical Euler buckling load P_cr. Standardized parameter settings: 0.8, 1.4, 2.2, 3.0, 3.8, 4.6 mm.

01

Strut Geometry and Alignment

Measure tubular strut length L = 1000 mm, outer diameter, and wall thickness, seating ends into spherical pinned fixtures.

02

Displacement Sensor Positioning

Align the non-contact laser sensor at mid-span (z = L/2) along the expected plane of minimum moment of inertia.

03

Initial Preload and Tare

Apply a gentle seating preload P = 0.5 kN to eliminate mechanical backlash, zeroing load and displacement channels.

04

Axial Compressive Loading

Increase compressive load incrementally until midpoint lateral deflections reach delta = 0.8, 1.4, 2.2, 3.0, 3.8, and 4.6 mm.

05

Southwell Parameter Calculation

Record axial load P at each deflection setting, computing the Southwell ratio delta / P (in mm/kN).

06

Southwell Plot Linear Regression

Plot delta / P versus delta, perform linear regression to determine slope m = 1 / P_cr, and compute P_cr = 1 / m = 12.50 kN.
