THEORY AND UNIT OPERATIONS CONTEXT

Process engineering background & physical principles.

Oxygen bomb calorimetry is the gold standard thermochemical method in chemical, petroleum, and energy engineering for determining standard gross heats of combustion (higher heating values, HHV), internal energies of reaction (ΔU_c^°), and standard enthalpies of formation (ΔH_f^°) of fuels, polymers, foodstocks, and chemical feedstocks. In an isoperibol oxygen bomb calorimeter, a known mass of combustible sample is ignited electrically inside a thick-walled, high-strength stainless steel pressure vessel (bomb) charged with excess pure oxygen gas at 3.0 MPa (30 bar). Complete combustion transforms organic carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen exclusively into gaseous CO_2 and condensed liquid H_2O: C_a H_b O_c (s) + (a + b/4 - c/2) O_2 (g) -> a CO_2 (g) + (b/2) H_2O (l). The bomb is submerged in a precisely weighed bucket of deionized water (2000.0 g) enclosed within a thermostatically jacketed isoperibol air space. Heat released by combustion transfers through the bomb walls into the surrounding water and calorimeter hardware, inducing a temperature rise of 1 to 4 °C. Because the calorimeter is not perfectly adiabatic, heat exchange with the constant-temperature jacket occurs during the rating periods. The Regnault–Pfaundler radiation correction method accounts for this thermal leakage, yielding the corrected temperature rise ΔT_c. Applying the first law of thermodynamics to the closed constant-volume bomb system yields: -ΔU_c = W_cal · ΔT_c - e_fuse - e_acid, where W_cal is the energy equivalent (effective heat capacity) of the calorimeter system, e_fuse is the combustion energy of the nickel-chromium ignition wire, and e_acid is the thermochemical correction for nitric acid formed from residual nitrogen. Standardized benzoic acid pellets (certified gross heat of combustion -Δu_c = 26.434 kJ/g) are combusted across masses from 0.40 to 1.40 g to determine the specific combustion thermometric slope S = (-Δu_c) / W_cal = 2.6500 °C/g, validating the calorimeter energy equivalent W_cal = 9.975 kJ/°C (9975 J/K).
