Civil engineering telemetry is evaluated rigorously using 64-bit IEEE 754 precision. Residuals reflect ordinary least-squares regression across successive observations. Continuous data structures support high-fidelity structural mechanics and geotechnical continuum modeling.
The civil engineering physical models apply within the specified calibrated operational window (0.5 to 3.5 %). Spring-brass Le Chatelier mold with 165 mm pointer needles. Standard EN 196-3 threshold: ΔL ≤ 10 mm. Linearized regression relates tip expansion ΔL directly to unhydrated free lime percentage C_free.

Prepare neat cement paste using water content equal to 0.78 times normal consistency P_w (e.g. 0.78 x 28.5% = 22.2%) according to EN 196-3.
Lightly oil split-ring mold; place on clean glass plate; fill mold with paste without excessive compaction; cover with top glass plate and small 100 g weight.
Submerge mold assembly in 20.0 ± 1.0 °C water bath for 24 ± 0.5 hours to permit normal setting and initial hardening.
Remove mold from water bath; immediately measure distance D_1 between needle indicator tips to the nearest 0.5 mm using callipers.
Submerge mold in boiling water bath; bring bath to boiling point within 25 to 30 minutes; maintain continuous boiling for exactly 3 hours ± 5 minutes.
Remove mold from boiling bath; cool in ambient water bath to 20 °C for 15 minutes; measure final needle tip distance D_2; calculate expansion ΔL = D_2 - D_1.
Points are your recorded observations. The solid regression line validates Soundness of Cement mathematical scaling.

Soundness in hydraulic cement defines its ability to retain volumetric stability and resist destructive delayed internal expansion after setting and hardening. If cement contains excessive quantities of uncombined 'hard-burnt' free lime (calcium oxide, CaO) or crystalline magnesia (periclase, MgO) resulting from improper kiln burning or raw feed proportioning, these minerals hydrate extremely sluggishly over months or years. When free lime eventually hydrates into calcium hydroxide, it undergoes a 98% volumetric expansion; similarly, magnesia hydrates into brucite with a 118% volume increase. Because this expansion occurs within an already hardened, rigid concrete matrix, it generates immense internal tensile bursting stresses that produce map cracking, disintegration, and structural failure. The classical Le Chatelier test (EN 196-3) utilizes a split spring-brass cylinder (30 mm diameter, 30 mm height) equipped with two long indicator pointer needles (165 mm from cylinder center). Cement paste at standard consistency (0.78 P_w) is molded, cured in water for 24 hours, measured for initial needle tip separation D_1, submerged in a boiling water bath for 3 hours to artificially accelerate delayed lime hydration, and cooled to measure final tip separation D_2. The expansion displacement ΔL = D_2 - D_1 must not exceed 10.0 mm under standard European specifications. In this laboratory, the soundness response is evaluated across variable free lime concentrations from 0.5% to 3.5% to quantify the expansion coefficient.
